Upcoming Brooks County Veteran's Program

Brooks County---Veterans’ Day is Friday, November 11, 2022 and the local Brooks County VFW (Veterans’ of Foreign Wars) is hosting a program at the Brooks County Gazebo on the Courthouse grounds at 10 a.m. In case of inclement weather, the program will move indoors to the Presbyterian Church.

Veterans Day is a day to remember and to thank those who have served. On your program you will find a listing of veterans who have served, been wounded, and those who were killed in various wars.


Least We Forget:

WW1---4,700,000 served, 204,000 were wounded, and 116,708 were killed.

WW2—16,000,000 served, 671,280 were wounded and 416,800 were killed.

Korea—5,720,000 served, 671,280 were wounded and 416,800 were killed.

Vietnam—8,774,000 served, 304,000 were wounded and 58,200 were killed.

Iraq—1,500,000 served, 31,952 were wounded and 4,424 were killed.

Total—36,694,000 served 1,318,,446 were wounded and 632,706 were killed.

COLQUITT CO – The GBI is investigating a use-of-force incident death involving a Trooper and a 44-year-old Pavo man.  On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at about 2:30 p.m., a Georgia State Trooper was patrolling in Colquitt County, Georgia near State Road 33 and Lanier Road. While in the area, the trooper noticed Kennedy driving a blue 4-wheeler on SR33. The Trooper was aware of recent thefts and burglaries in the area involving a blue 4-wheeler. The Trooper followed Kennedy and attempted to pull him over using the emergency lights on his patrol car. Kennedy did not stop and drove away on the 4-wheeler. The Trooper chased him through several fields, a ditch, and back to the highway. While driving through another field during the chase, Kennedy turned the 4-wheeler into the Trooper’s patrol car, causing the 4-wheeler to overturn. Kennedy then ran away. The Trooper and a GSP K-9 chased Kennedy, and the K-9 caught up to and bit Kennedy to stop him. The Trooper handcuffed Kennedy and noticed that Kennedy had an injury from the bite. EMS and local deputies who responded to assist gave Kennedy medical treatment on the scene. Kennedy was taken to a hospital in Macon for treatment for his injuries. He later died at the hospital on Tuesday, August 27th in the early afternoon. Kennedy will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. The investigation is active and ongoing. Once complete, the case will be provided to Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brad Shealy for review

Quitman, GA (December 2, 2024) - The GBI has arrested and charged Wilbert Mobley, Jr., age 44, of Quitman, GA, with 2 counts of Malice Murder, 2 counts of Felony Murder, 3 counts of Aggravated Assault, and 3 counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime in connection to the deaths of Tamiko Mobley, age 48, of Quitman, GA, and Tiaja Mobley, age 25, of Quitman, GA. On Friday, November 29, 2024, at about 9:40 a.m., the GBI was requested by the Brooks County Sheriff’s Office to assist with a double homicide that took place on Shiver Lane in Quitman, GA. Deputies initially responded and found two women, a mother and daughter later identified as Tamiko and Tiaja Mobley, had been shot inside the home. Tamiko Mobley did not live at the home but was staying with her daughter after an argument with her husband, Wilbert Mobley, Jr., the night before. Investigators found a man who had also been shot at and hit by debris during the incident. He sustained non-fatal injuries. Both victims will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office where autopsies will be performed. Quitman Police Department Officers who were assisting Brooks County deputies in responding to the 911 call arrested Wilbert Mobley, Jr. outside the home. Mobley was booked into the Brooks County Jail. This case is active and ongoing. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Thomasville at 229-225-4090.
