Girls on the Run 5K a Success

Brooks County—The Girls on the Run 5K race was held on November 12, 2022, at the Fellowship Hall in Valdosta, GA (Brooks County) off Highway 133 at Brookside. Schools from all over the surrounding areas from grades 3rd through 8th entered this race. The race began at 9 a.m.


In Brooks County, North Brooks Elementary (NBES) Girls on the Run program raced with several girls who entered the program. Volunteer runners came to partner with the girls and NBES girls did great.


 Jada Manning, 3rd grade finished her 5K run in 33 minutes! Her mother, Ashley Manning said, “She did it! 5k in 33 minutes! We are so proud of you bug! Always reach for the stars!” Jada’s partner runner, Dawn Surrency stated on her Facebook post that “that girl can run” after saying she left her while running. Dawn also said, “Jada I am so stinking proud of you. Keep running girl. You are going to go places.” 


North Brooks Elementary School posted several pictures of the event on their Facebook page saying, “Congratulations to everyone who completed the Girls on the Run race today! It was great to see everyone accomplishing their goals! Thanks to all the girls for their hard work, Mrs. Monetti, Mrs. Lee, and all of the partner runners who came out in support!” 


Quitman Elementary School also participated and posted a video of the warmup dance prior to the racing on their Facebook page. Further pictures were also posted of the QES girls for Girls on the Run, along with this statement, “QES Family, I am beyond proud of these girls! They preserved through trials, self-doubt, worry, and just all-around pre-teenager girl issues to get to this moment! I am beyond elated that they found their “Star Power” to finish the race! To the Dads and Big Brother that ran this race with their beautiful daughters and sister, “Thank You”! You Really made their day! The QES male role models are awesome, and I appreciate you! Girls, it was amazing, and I hope you enjoyed the season! GOTR was so much fun!” 


School in surrounding counties included: Cook County Elementary, Cross Creek Elementary, Dewar Elementary, Hahira Elementary, Hahira Middle, Lake Park Elementary, Lowndes Middle School, Mitchell County Elementary, Pine Grove Elementary, Pinevale Elementary, Sallas Mahone Elementary, St. John Catholic School, SL Mason Elementary, Thomas County Middle, Valdosta Middle, and Westside Elementary. 


The Girls on the Run 5k event was sponsored by Pepsi Valdosta and all proceeds from the event went to the Girls on the Run. All participating girls in the program went through a 10-week program that taught lessons to encourage the girls to learn confidence, build peer connections, being encouraged to participate in community services and various other life skills.

COLQUITT CO – The GBI is investigating a use-of-force incident death involving a Trooper and a 44-year-old Pavo man.  On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at about 2:30 p.m., a Georgia State Trooper was patrolling in Colquitt County, Georgia near State Road 33 and Lanier Road. While in the area, the trooper noticed Kennedy driving a blue 4-wheeler on SR33. The Trooper was aware of recent thefts and burglaries in the area involving a blue 4-wheeler. The Trooper followed Kennedy and attempted to pull him over using the emergency lights on his patrol car. Kennedy did not stop and drove away on the 4-wheeler. The Trooper chased him through several fields, a ditch, and back to the highway. While driving through another field during the chase, Kennedy turned the 4-wheeler into the Trooper’s patrol car, causing the 4-wheeler to overturn. Kennedy then ran away. The Trooper and a GSP K-9 chased Kennedy, and the K-9 caught up to and bit Kennedy to stop him. The Trooper handcuffed Kennedy and noticed that Kennedy had an injury from the bite. EMS and local deputies who responded to assist gave Kennedy medical treatment on the scene. Kennedy was taken to a hospital in Macon for treatment for his injuries. He later died at the hospital on Tuesday, August 27th in the early afternoon. Kennedy will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. The investigation is active and ongoing. Once complete, the case will be provided to Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brad Shealy for review

Quitman, GA (December 2, 2024) - The GBI has arrested and charged Wilbert Mobley, Jr., age 44, of Quitman, GA, with 2 counts of Malice Murder, 2 counts of Felony Murder, 3 counts of Aggravated Assault, and 3 counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime in connection to the deaths of Tamiko Mobley, age 48, of Quitman, GA, and Tiaja Mobley, age 25, of Quitman, GA. On Friday, November 29, 2024, at about 9:40 a.m., the GBI was requested by the Brooks County Sheriff’s Office to assist with a double homicide that took place on Shiver Lane in Quitman, GA. Deputies initially responded and found two women, a mother and daughter later identified as Tamiko and Tiaja Mobley, had been shot inside the home. Tamiko Mobley did not live at the home but was staying with her daughter after an argument with her husband, Wilbert Mobley, Jr., the night before. Investigators found a man who had also been shot at and hit by debris during the incident. He sustained non-fatal injuries. Both victims will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office where autopsies will be performed. Quitman Police Department Officers who were assisting Brooks County deputies in responding to the 911 call arrested Wilbert Mobley, Jr. outside the home. Mobley was booked into the Brooks County Jail. This case is active and ongoing. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Thomasville at 229-225-4090.
