Quitman—On July 8, 2023, Quitman, GA newest business Smoke City held their Grand Opening. Smoke City is a smoke shop located on Highway 84 next to the Post Office. It is owned and operated by locals Jessica Daniels and Jordan Rose, both graduates of Brooks County High.

Both owners saw a need for a smoke shop, “there wasn’t a smoke shop anywhere in Brooks County, with the closest being in Valdosta or Thomasville for many. Citizens in Brooks and Quitman had to drive elsewhere taking business elsewhere from the area,” said Rose.

Daniels, a graduate of Brooks County High in 2015 saw the same need and wanted to do something that would help the community bring in more business. Daniels saw the desire in her community and the need from many of the locals. Having that need right in Quitman makes it easier for many to have access to the products that are offered.

Jordan Rose, a graduate from Brooks County High in 2019, is also a recent graduate of Morehouse College. His major was Political Science and he graduated in 2022.

Rose is also the son of the late Tawanda Rose whom many knew and miss. In honor of his mother Jordan continues her tradition to help students too. On June 1, 2023, Jordan was able to give three $1,000 scholarships from this year’s Tawanda L Rose Legacy Scholarship. “Last month we gave out 3 $1,000 scholarships for this year’s Tawanda L Rose Legacy Scholarship! Super excited to continue this tradition in my mom Libra Rose’s legacy - my goal is to make the scholarship fund bigger each year until it’s eventually a full ride (or multiple)!” Jordan Rose posted on his Facebook page.

Jordan and Daniels would like to let everyone know that Smoke City is now your one stop store for all your smoke shop needs. Be sure to stop by and check out their products and connect with them on Facebook.

Hours open are 11a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Located at 406 E. Screven St. Quitman, GA 31643.

COLQUITT CO – The GBI is investigating a use-of-force incident death involving a Trooper and a 44-year-old Pavo man. On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at about 2:30 p.m., a Georgia State Trooper was patrolling in Colquitt County, Georgia near State Road 33 and Lanier Road. While in the area, the trooper noticed Kennedy driving a blue 4-wheeler on SR33. The Trooper was aware of recent thefts and burglaries in the area involving a blue 4-wheeler. The Trooper followed Kennedy and attempted to pull him over using the emergency lights on his patrol car. Kennedy did not stop and drove away on the 4-wheeler. The Trooper chased him through several fields, a ditch, and back to the highway. While driving through another field during the chase, Kennedy turned the 4-wheeler into the Trooper’s patrol car, causing the 4-wheeler to overturn. Kennedy then ran away. The Trooper and a GSP K-9 chased Kennedy, and the K-9 caught up to and bit Kennedy to stop him. The Trooper handcuffed Kennedy and noticed that Kennedy had an injury from the bite. EMS and local deputies who responded to assist gave Kennedy medical treatment on the scene. Kennedy was taken to a hospital in Macon for treatment for his injuries. He later died at the hospital on Tuesday, August 27th in the early afternoon. Kennedy will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. The investigation is active and ongoing. Once complete, the case will be provided to Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brad Shealy for review
