November 8th is Election Day (Voting Day)

Brooks County, Georgia has been in early election since October 2022. The last day for voting will be November 8th. Polls around Brooks County will be open beginning at 7 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m.
Candidates up for elections include:
- Governor's position with Brian Kemp, Shane Hazel and Stacey Abrams,
- United States Senate position with Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker, Lieutenant Governor with Charlie Bailey, Burt Jones, and Ryan Graham, Secretary of State with Brad Raffensperger, Bee Nguyen, and Ted Metz, Attorney General with Jen Jordan, Chris Carr and Martin Cowen,
- Commissioner of Labor with William "Will" Boddie Jr and Bruce Thompson, Commissioner of Agriculture with Nakita Hemingway, Tyler Harper, and David Raudabaugh,
- Commissioner of Insurance and Fire Safety with Janice Laws Robinson and John King,
- State School Superintendent with Alisha Thomas Searcy and Richard Woods.
Proposed Constitutional Amendments:
- Senate Resolution No. 134, Resolution Act No. 304; Provides for suspension of compensation of certain State Officers and members of the General Assembly.
- House Resolution No. 594, resolution act no. 803; provides for temporary local tax relief after disasters.
Statewide Referendum Questions:
- House Bill 997, Act No. 859; provides for ad valorem tax exemption for certain timber production, reforestation, and harvesting equipment.
- House Bill 698, Act No. 260; expands ad valorem tax exemption for family-owned farms and adds qualified products to the exemption.

COLQUITT CO – The GBI is investigating a use-of-force incident death involving a Trooper and a 44-year-old Pavo man. On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at about 2:30 p.m., a Georgia State Trooper was patrolling in Colquitt County, Georgia near State Road 33 and Lanier Road. While in the area, the trooper noticed Kennedy driving a blue 4-wheeler on SR33. The Trooper was aware of recent thefts and burglaries in the area involving a blue 4-wheeler. The Trooper followed Kennedy and attempted to pull him over using the emergency lights on his patrol car. Kennedy did not stop and drove away on the 4-wheeler. The Trooper chased him through several fields, a ditch, and back to the highway. While driving through another field during the chase, Kennedy turned the 4-wheeler into the Trooper’s patrol car, causing the 4-wheeler to overturn. Kennedy then ran away. The Trooper and a GSP K-9 chased Kennedy, and the K-9 caught up to and bit Kennedy to stop him. The Trooper handcuffed Kennedy and noticed that Kennedy had an injury from the bite. EMS and local deputies who responded to assist gave Kennedy medical treatment on the scene. Kennedy was taken to a hospital in Macon for treatment for his injuries. He later died at the hospital on Tuesday, August 27th in the early afternoon. Kennedy will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. The investigation is active and ongoing. Once complete, the case will be provided to Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brad Shealy for review

Quitman, GA (December 2, 2024) - The GBI has arrested and charged Wilbert Mobley, Jr., age 44, of Quitman, GA, with 2 counts of Malice Murder, 2 counts of Felony Murder, 3 counts of Aggravated Assault, and 3 counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime in connection to the deaths of Tamiko Mobley, age 48, of Quitman, GA, and Tiaja Mobley, age 25, of Quitman, GA. On Friday, November 29, 2024, at about 9:40 a.m., the GBI was requested by the Brooks County Sheriff’s Office to assist with a double homicide that took place on Shiver Lane in Quitman, GA. Deputies initially responded and found two women, a mother and daughter later identified as Tamiko and Tiaja Mobley, had been shot inside the home. Tamiko Mobley did not live at the home but was staying with her daughter after an argument with her husband, Wilbert Mobley, Jr., the night before. Investigators found a man who had also been shot at and hit by debris during the incident. He sustained non-fatal injuries. Both victims will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office where autopsies will be performed. Quitman Police Department Officers who were assisting Brooks County deputies in responding to the 911 call arrested Wilbert Mobley, Jr. outside the home. Mobley was booked into the Brooks County Jail. This case is active and ongoing.
