Brooks County—Halloween, October 31st, the day that marks the end of summer and the beginning of harvest according to history, was a success throughout the Brooks County and neighboring areas. 2022 Halloween was bustling with activities from fall festivals to trunk and treats, to the traditional Halloween trick or treating, dressing up at school and of course the best Haunted house in Pavo.
Brooks County Schools allowed students to dress up in their costumes for Halloween Friday October 28th. Many students enjoyed seeing what their teachers were dressed like, others enjoyed seeing their friends and the many costumes.
Brooks County Early Learning Center students enjoyed dressing up and learning how to carve a pumpkin.
North Brooks Elementary School held their Costume Day/Red Ribbon Week’s last day on Friday announcing “Boo/No to Drugs!” Pictures were posted on their Facebook page with “We had the best Red Ribbon costume day—everyone’s costumes were so creative and fun!” A lot of extra treats were also given that day.
Quitman Elementary School had a Kindergarten pumpkin character report with their carved pumpkins and a story report to share. Students and staff also dressed up in all shades of pink on Friday in support of Breast Cancer. The students enjoyed learning of the honoring the survivors, showing support for the disease research, and remembering those lost from the disease. They did not go without extra treats.
Brooks County Middle School celebrated their Red Ribbon Week last day with “Let’s Scare Drugs Away”. Students were to wear their costumes Monday in celebration of Halloween but also to fit the motto.
The City of Barwick kicked off their Halloween weekend holiday by giving a trunk or treat for all the children on Friday night, October 28th. The vehicles lined up along the park and decorated their them to their favorite characters or themes. Kids from all overtook advantage by gathering as much candy as they could.
The City of Pavo Hardware store gathered several buggies, trucks, and cars for their annual trunk or treat. Games, candy, pictures, characters, and pure joy was seen and heard throughout the street on Saturday night, October 29th. Children gathered to catch a fish in a swimming pool, others stood in line to see how good they were at corn hole. Children took advantage as well of the closed road throwing the football and playing tag. Pavo Haunted House was also offering their last weekend haunting for those who dared to in. Pavo Haunted House was open the entire month of October each weekend.
Not to be left out Boston Minimarathon was held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with lots of fall festival activities for all who came. Ending the day was a Trunk or Treat event that began at 6 p.m. and lasted till 8 p.m. Local citizens gathered on Main Street in Boston with decorated vehicles and costumes to hand out all types of candy. Children gathered to fill their Halloween bags and buckets and stopped at one area to gather a hotdog and drink before leaving.
Sunday, October 30th Lawson’s Peach Shed in Morven held several vehicles all decorated for their Trunk or Treat event. Local churches from all parts of North Brooks County participated to give kids games, food, and of course candy. Local churches decorated their vehicles in various characters or themes, dressed in costumes and stood with kids for pictures as well as giving hand full of candy to them all. Brooks County Fire Department was also in attendance with handing out candy and a character for the kids—Dorothy of the Wizard of Oz. Boys and Girls Club employees also produced games like beanbag throwing and ring tossing. Lawson Peach Shed offered refreshing Peach Tea and more offered chips with a hotdog.
Pineview Community Church down Madison Highway south of Quitman held their community fall festival and Trunk or Treat Sunday evening. Kids were able to play bobbing for apples, get a fall picture made, paint a pumpkin and take advantage of the large blow-up slide. As evening progressed, soup was offered, boiled peanuts, lemonade, and sweet tea for all to enjoy.
Trunk or Treat participants gathered in a circle in the parking area and dressed up to blend with the theme of their trunks. Children were able to go around as many times as they wanted to gather candy so long as parents were okay with it. As darkness began to fall, a small fire had surrounding seating for those who wanted to participate in making smores and telling ghost stories.
Finally, Halloween came with a huge gathering in Quitman, Creepin’ on Court Street and S. Culpepper Trunk or Treat were two of Halloween’s major events in Brooks County. Local residents along the historic North Court Street, decorated their homes, dressed up and offered the famous well-known trick or treat event. Children and parents gathered alongside both sides of the street and began walking. Others used hayrides to go house to house or buggies. Pictures were taken some videos as well. Children laughed, hugged, run around and simply enjoyed the event.
Other visiting citizens decorated their vehicles and parked in Citizen National Bank to offer treats from their trunks, Brooks County Fire Department, Quitman Fire Department also took a place and participated in offering picture back drops and candy. More citizens offered hot dogs and chips as well as water to all who wanted something to eat.
Just to the south and one street over local businesses held one more stop for all those who wanted more candy or food. South Culpepper Street had lined vehicles decorated, one area of with tables and a grill serving hotdogs and more. Themes of all sorts were seen, and children raced to each to gather even more candy. Business owners there wanted to thank the Quitman Police Department for blocking the traffic on that block so that there were no further worries then needed for parents and children.
Further away in surrounding areas local churches and trick or treating events took place throughout various counties. Citizens from Brooks County was able to take advantage of those events, and many enjoyed them all.
