Brooks County, GA ---On Saturday, November 4, 2023, the annual Girls on the Run 5k was held by the Fellowship Home in North Brooks County. Schools throughout the area including North Brooks Elementary and Brooks County Middle School participated in the run.

Girls on the Run South Georgia is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that enhances participants’ physical, emotional, and social skills for successfully navigating life experiences. This organization’s mission is to inspire girls to be healthy, joyful and confident. Their vision is a world where every girl knows and activates her potential and is free to boldly pursue their dreams.

Girls on the Run South Georgia serves Brooks, Berrien, Cook, Lanier, Lowndes, Echols, Thomas, and Tift counties. Every year, grades 3 to 8 can participate to learn those valuable life skills and to help celebrate the annual Girls on the Run 5k.

This year runners were from every school in the participating counties.  Runners in the celebration ran with partners. Many runners’ partners were siblings, parents, grandparents, teachers, school staff, or friends.

As they made their run visitors watching cheered the girls on and for every cheer a smile could be seen, a burst of energy, or the urge to move forward. As the participants neared the finish line, clapping, cheers and air punches could be seen.

North Brooks Elementary shared “It was a beautiful morning for a run! Our NBES Girls on the Run crew completed their 5k this morning! We are so proud of the girls who committed themselves to this program and met this goal of running a 5K!”

Brooks County Middles School shared, “The BCMS Girls on the Run team showed out at their 5k this morning! We are so proud of all their hard work, dedication, and commitment to be ‘unstoppable’! #levelup”.

When some of the participants were asked if they would continue to participate in Girls on the Run South Georgia the majority of them announced without hesitation, “Yes definitely! It was so much fun!”

Congratulations to all the girls who ran the 5k this year and for anyone wanting to know more about this organization you can contact your child’s school or find Girls on the Run South GA online.

COLQUITT CO – The GBI is investigating a use-of-force incident death involving a Trooper and a 44-year-old Pavo man. On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at about 2:30 p.m., a Georgia State Trooper was patrolling in Colquitt County, Georgia near State Road 33 and Lanier Road. While in the area, the trooper noticed Kennedy driving a blue 4-wheeler on SR33. The Trooper was aware of recent thefts and burglaries in the area involving a blue 4-wheeler. The Trooper followed Kennedy and attempted to pull him over using the emergency lights on his patrol car. Kennedy did not stop and drove away on the 4-wheeler. The Trooper chased him through several fields, a ditch, and back to the highway. While driving through another field during the chase, Kennedy turned the 4-wheeler into the Trooper’s patrol car, causing the 4-wheeler to overturn. Kennedy then ran away. The Trooper and a GSP K-9 chased Kennedy, and the K-9 caught up to and bit Kennedy to stop him. The Trooper handcuffed Kennedy and noticed that Kennedy had an injury from the bite. EMS and local deputies who responded to assist gave Kennedy medical treatment on the scene. Kennedy was taken to a hospital in Macon for treatment for his injuries. He later died at the hospital on Tuesday, August 27th in the early afternoon. Kennedy will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. The investigation is active and ongoing. Once complete, the case will be provided to Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brad Shealy for review
