If you ever wander into the area of Quitman, Georgia and find you have a hankering for some type of an adult drink, then you need to stop by Mr. Joe’s Package Store.

This family-owned business is American made and offers a ton of selections including a wine section, variety of spirits, beer, and wine coolers. Mr. Joe’s Package Store has a bit of everything a person could hope to find especially in selective wines and liquors. There is local distillery beers, liquors, and wines to choose from, imported, as well as a friendly atmosphere when you walk in.

Owners Joe and his wife Mesheal Leverett have seven children, Christopher, Chandler, Meagan, Joseph, Aaron, and Mackenzie. Each of them played a role in creating this business and the elder children often help out there in the store. Joe stated, “We heard when Quitman City Council passed that liquor sales license earlier this year, 2022. My wife, Mesheal looked at me and told me we should build a liquor store.” As surprised as Joe was, he went with the idea and soon came up with a building design and décor that suited a liquor store. Soon after his design began to become a reality as work crews cleared the area and builders began building from ground up.

Wide aisles stocked full in an organized fashion with rows of liquors and room to move around one another while browsing. A large walk-in beer cooler for all the name brand beer as well as the specialty brands and local brands. In the corner of the store a wine section specifically catering to all wines including a display wall. Large Jack Daniels barrels throughout the store and on the porch.

Mr. Joe’s Package Store began stocking those shelves, coolers, and wall display only months after the store’s final piece was laid. They opened and since their opening they have added an ice box for customers and a drive thru for purchases.

One of their unique features is their social media page “Mr. Joe’s Package Store” on Facebook. COLQUITT CO – The GBI is investigating a use-of-force incident death involving a Trooper and a 44-year-old Pavo man. On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at about 2:30 p.m., a Georgia State Trooper was patrolling in Colquitt County, Georgia near State Road 33 and Lanier Road. While in the area, the trooper noticed Kennedy driving a blue 4-wheeler on SR33. The Trooper was aware of recent thefts and burglaries in the area involving a blue 4-wheeler. The Trooper followed Kennedy and attempted to pull him over using the emergency lights on his patrol car. Kennedy did not stop and drove away on the 4-wheeler. The Trooper chased him through several fields, a ditch, and back to the highway. While driving through another field during the chase, Kennedy turned the 4-wheeler into the Trooper’s patrol car, causing the 4-wheeler to overturn. Kennedy then ran away. The Trooper and a GSP K-9 chased Kennedy, and the K-9 caught up to and bit Kennedy to stop him. The Trooper handcuffed Kennedy and noticed that Kennedy had an injury from the bite. EMS and local deputies who responded to assist gave Kennedy medical treatment on the scene. Kennedy was taken to a hospital in Macon for treatment for his injuries. He later died at the hospital on Tuesday, August 27th in the early afternoon. Kennedy will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. The investigation is active and ongoing. Once complete, the case will be provided to Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brad Shealy for review
