Brooks County Education—On April 19, 2023 local Brooks County School principals held their monthly coffee and conversation with anyone from the community who wanted to attend. In the meeting those who attended were greeted by all and asked if they were a parent, guardian, or grandparent, or possibly a community member interested in discussing things about the schools. As attendees spoke to the principals of their students’ school, many others were making some coffee.
Brooks County Schools principals were eager to share their “Year in Review” with all but were adamant as well to get as much feedback and thoughts on how to better prepare for their upcoming year and what the thoughts were of those who came of the year thus far.
Upon entering, I spoke and discussed the year in review with Brooks County Middle School’s principal Dr. Maura Lewis. In our discussion we spoke about their goals through the year which are to increase their career and college readiness performance index (CCRPI) by 3 % and to increase their climate rating by 3 %.
Ideas were given by both of us, and we also discussed the means of getting more ideas from other parents. One way for you, as a parent, to do this is to contact your child’s school and arrange a meeting with the principal. They will gladly meet with you to discuss your ideas to help the school and your child succeed more in school. As a Title I school, parent involvement, family involvement, and community involvement is very important.
Brooks County Schools are considered a Title I school. Title I school means the school is designed to support state and local school reform efforts tied to the challenging academic standards to improve teaching and learning for students. These school programs must be based on effective means of improving student achievement and include strategies to support family engagement. All Title I schools must also jointly develop with parents and family members a written parent and family engagement policy.
The 2022-2023 Goals for Student Achievement by the district is to “increase the number of students scoring Developing or higher by 3% as measured by the Spring 23 GA Milestones, and to improve in areas of the climate rating by 3% through the implementation of targeted resources and interventions.
One of the ways the schools implement more interaction with parents and community members is the coffee & conversation dates. These meetings are designed to be comfortable and offer anyone a chance to interact with the principals of schools. A way to have discussions outside of the normal routines. The meetings are more relaxed, laid back, and open to all.
If you haven’t attended one this year, don’t miss out. The next Coffee and Conversation date will be on May 9, 2023 at 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Brooks County School District office building
