Barwick, GA—Citizens, vendors, and visitors all came together this past Saturday, September 12, 2023, in the small town of Barwick, Georgia, for the celebration of the town’s establishment 120 years ago. Barwick’s situated between two smaller towns, Pavo and Boston, and like those two towns sits in the middle of the county line. Therefore, Barwick is a town to both Thomas County and Brooks County.
Established in 1903, Barwick began long before that in the late 1800s thanks to the postal route that passed through the area. Old Coffee Road was one of the postal routes and vehicular traffic ran on the road to get to Florida. Since it’s establishment, several businesses and homes were built and thrived there. As the years have passed, many have left, yet Barwick is still there with loving citizens, and small town qualities.
City officials, Mayor I J McCann, and local businesses all wanted to celebrate the continuation of the small town. To help bring more visitors the town put on a celebration in their newly renovated town park.
The City of Barwick’s town park holds a playground, a sheltered area with grill and tables to sit, a track, a baseball field that can also convert to a soccer field, and a large area for children to ride their bikes.
Saturday, the park held several vendors and visitors, a live band on the stage situated in the back, and several delights for the children. People came through to look through the vendors for unique crafts and art, food, and possible gifts. Others came through to grab a cool snack like the Italian Ice or the Peach Ice cream.
Others came through to socialize with friends and to meet new people, while parents brought their children to jump on the bounce house, ride the train, or play in the park on the slide, swings, or monkey bars. Those children were also treated to free watermelon and if parents chose the kids were able to get a hot dog and all the wonderful things to put on it.
Mayor I J McCann greeted guests throughout the day along with the local city council. Pictures were taken, laughter was heard, smiles were seen, as visitors mingled with vendors, friends, family, and others.
Barwick Baptist Church also held a tent for anyone who wanted to stop by to learn more about their church. The members offered goody bags for adults and kids, offered help and answered questions.
The City of Barwick would like to thank all those who attended, vended, the live band, and of course would hope to see many return for their annual events. The next event will be held in April for the Easter Egg Hunt, but the city is also hoping Santa will stop in for the kids before Christmas too!
