Adults and Students Gathered for AR Family Reading Time at NBES Library

Morven, GA—At NBES (North Brooks Elementary School) family members were invited to help ECHOES students meet their requirements for AR Reading. Groups gathered in the school library or in various classrooms. Students chose books they liked, and family members sat with them while the student read them the book, or the family member read to the student.

After reading, the student could obtain a Chromebook and sign in to take their AR test. There was no limit on the number of books students needed to read, nor on the number of tests they could take.

This event lasted from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on December 15, 2022. Principal Lee stopped in to speak with adults and students and to see the progress as well as encourage the students to do well.

Mrs. Wortman, the Media Specialist at NBES, was absolutely thrilled to see the kids and their family members sit at the tables to read books to one another. “This is something the ECHOES and Mr. Lee wanted to do to help students gain their AR points for AR points party,” she said.

AR is Accelerated Reading, that is computed on a ba

se of difficulty of books and length of books. Goals are set by the program and the teacher for students and each student is encouraged to meet their goal every nine weeks.

ECHOES and NBES participants enjoyed the time to read and be read to. Each adult and student received a snack and drink on the way out. Students laughed at stories, jumped for joy when they passed a test, smiled and interacted with their family to read. “I love seeing kids read to their parents, or adults. It makes me so happy when they seem to be enjoying their reading as well,” said Wortman.

NBES is an Elementary School located in the Morven, Georgia area. It serves to educate students while they have fun in grades K-5.

COLQUITT CO – The GBI is investigating a use-of-force incident death involving a Trooper and a 44-year-old Pavo man. On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at about 2:30 p.m., a Georgia State Trooper was patrolling in Colquitt County, Georgia near State Road 33 and Lanier Road. While in the area, the trooper noticed Kennedy driving a blue 4-wheeler on SR33. The Trooper was aware of recent thefts and burglaries in the area involving a blue 4-wheeler. The Trooper followed Kennedy and attempted to pull him over using the emergency lights on his patrol car. Kennedy did not stop and drove away on the 4-wheeler. The Trooper chased him through several fields, a ditch, and back to the highway. While driving through another field during the chase, Kennedy turned the 4-wheeler into the Trooper’s patrol car, causing the 4-wheeler to overturn. Kennedy then ran away. The Trooper and a GSP K-9 chased Kennedy, and the K-9 caught up to and bit Kennedy to stop him. The Trooper handcuffed Kennedy and noticed that Kennedy had an injury from the bite. EMS and local deputies who responded to assist gave Kennedy medical treatment on the scene. Kennedy was taken to a hospital in Macon for treatment for his injuries. He later died at the hospital on Tuesday, August 27th in the early afternoon. Kennedy will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. The investigation is active and ongoing. Once complete, the case will be provided to Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brad Shealy for review
