Coach Gay Named BCHS Teacher of the Year

Dr. Chris Chastain, Principal of Brooks County High School, proudly announced that Troy Gay had been chosen by his peers to serve as the 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year for BCHS. Chastain stated, “He serves as an American Government teacher in our Social Studies Department and has done so for the past six years. His students and colleagues both adore Coach Gay and appreciate his welcoming presence.” Gay graduated from Valdosta State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and with a master’s degree in Secondary Education (Political Science) from Grand Canyon University. 

Coach Gay also continues to serve our students in athletics. He has coached our Trojans on the football field for the past 7 years, as well as on the baseball field for several years and currently as our Ladies Track Coach where he led them to a region Championship this past season. Prior to joining the Trojan family, he had a successful career with the Department of Corrections for 21 years. WE are super proud for Coach Gay to represent us as our TOTY and are glad he continues to choose to be a part of the Brooks County Schools Family. #GoTrojans

Gay, a 1991 graduate of Brooks County High School, shared, “The most rewarding aspect of teaching is the ability to make an impact on the next generation and the community where I actually grew up. I became a teacher because I worked 21 years in a correctional facility, and I wanted to use what I had learned in my past profession to help students make good life choices.”. As a six-year veteran, Gay has made many memories, but his favorite is when his first advisement class graduated and nine of those students were honor graduates."

Coach Gay is married to Wendy Williams Gay and has a daughter, KaSheika Williams. When not in the classroom or on the athletic field, Gay enjoys traveling with his amazing wife, watching all sports, and chasing his granddaughters, GiGi and Nuri.

He will represent Brooks County High School for the 2023-2024 school year as Teacher of the Year and will compete at the district level for the title of Brooks County Schools Teacher of the Year. The BCS Teacher of the Year will compete at the state level for the title of Georgia Teacher of the Year. The BCS Teacher of the Year will be named at the Teacher of the Year banquet hosted in the fall.
