It is now that time once again for Brooks County Schools to begin classes. Opening Day for the 1st day of class begins Monday, August 8, 2022, for the 2022-2023 school year.
Local law enforcement and school officials are urging drivers to remember to be cautious around school bus stops. Georgia laws changed with stricter requirements for drivers in 2019. Those restricting laws include:
· All traffic traveling in EVERY LANE must stop when a school bus is stopped to pick up children or drop them off. This includes roads with turning lanes, four way roads with no median between them and with four way with turning lanes.
· Divided highways with a median separation are required to only stop when vehicles are traveling in the same lane and a stop sign on the bus is out.
Penalties could be a fine up $1,000, court appearance, jail time up to a year, suspension of license or points taken from your license. More penalties could be given by a judge if a camera catches you passing the school bus or if a judge feels it is necessary to discourage behavior for the future.
Brooks County Schools want their students to arrive safely and without any injuries. Drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists all need to be aware of their surroundings and especially cautious around school busses. Many of the accidents with school busses pertain to incidents with all of these and other reasons.
In a hope to help keep communication open with parents of Brooks County students, Brooks County Schools have a new parent portal app for their smart phone. The Edulog Parent Portal app is for parents to receive information concerning their child’s school bus ride. It will allow you to access the designated bust stop locations and times, see real-time information about the location of the bus and parents will receive notifications when the bus is getting close to the stop. The link to download this app is found at https://www.brooks.k12.ga.us/article/797648 on the schools website.
BC News and Stories, LLC wishes all the students in Brooks County a great 2022-2023 school year.
