On Friday, June 2, 2023, according to local law enforcement Sheriff Mike Dewey, a suspect was apprehended after being chased for over three hours.

The car thief stole a vehicle after being reported about prowling around several houses. The owner of the vehicle notices the theft and began firing at the thief who sped off in the stolen car. The owner chased after on highway 84 where the thief dumped the car and began running on foot through a wooded area.

Sheriff Mike Dewey shared a Facebook post urging residents in Brooks County around Quitman and Dixie/Grooverville areas south of Highway 84 to “lock all doors to buildings and vehicles. A large volume of ground units, Brooks Co. S.0, Lowndes Co. S.O., and GSP units, several Police K-9 units, drones and GSP helicopters are in the area. We are looking for a tall black male dressed all in black.”

After long hours another post was sent out by the sheriff stating, “We have him in custody” along with a photo.

Hours later, Sheriff Mike Dewey posted, “it’s been a long, hot day but I want to extend my deepest thanks to a list of dedicated law enforcement officers for a day of hard work. The manhunt that lasted all day with highly trained law enforcement K-9 units led officers on a track of 10 miles, through woods, water, mud, and corn fields. These dedicated officers and agencies have always came through when we needed assistance. They never quit til we had the suspect in custody. Great teamwork to protect our citizens.”

The list of those the Sheriff wanted to thank are:

Brooks County Sheriff’s Office Uniform Patrol, Criminal Investigations, and Narcotics Agents.

Quitman Police Department

Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk and the Lowndes County Sheriff’s K-9 units.

Georgia State Patrol aviation unit and K-9 units.

Department of Corrections K-9 unites

Department of Public Safety Motor Carrier Compliance Division

Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division and

Georgia Bureau of Investigations.

The suspect’s identity and charges have not been released at this time. Further investigation is underway. Please check back for updated information.

COLQUITT CO – The GBI is investigating a use-of-force incident death involving a Trooper and a 44-year-old Pavo man. On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at about 2:30 p.m., a Georgia State Trooper was patrolling in Colquitt County, Georgia near State Road 33 and Lanier Road. While in the area, the trooper noticed Kennedy driving a blue 4-wheeler on SR33. The Trooper was aware of recent thefts and burglaries in the area involving a blue 4-wheeler. The Trooper followed Kennedy and attempted to pull him over using the emergency lights on his patrol car. Kennedy did not stop and drove away on the 4-wheeler. The Trooper chased him through several fields, a ditch, and back to the highway. While driving through another field during the chase, Kennedy turned the 4-wheeler into the Trooper’s patrol car, causing the 4-wheeler to overturn. Kennedy then ran away. The Trooper and a GSP K-9 chased Kennedy, and the K-9 caught up to and bit Kennedy to stop him. The Trooper handcuffed Kennedy and noticed that Kennedy had an injury from the bite. EMS and local deputies who responded to assist gave Kennedy medical treatment on the scene. Kennedy was taken to a hospital in Macon for treatment for his injuries. He later died at the hospital on Tuesday, August 27th in the early afternoon. Kennedy will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. The investigation is active and ongoing. Once complete, the case will be provided to Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brad Shealy for review
