On August 14, 2022, Brooks County Fire Department dispatched on a call approximately 6:01 p.m. to combat a fire at 851 Johnson Short Road. The old home was an unoccupied structure and was abandoned according to Chief Catlett.
Chief Catlett released a statement concerning the fire saying, “Engine 10 and other units in district 1 were dispatched at 1752 hrs.
Engine 1 and Engine 10 arrived on scene just seconds apart at 1801. 20 and 1801.32 hrs. Engine 10 advised they had a fully involved structure on fire and would be in a defensive operation deploying a 2 1/2 " line to keep the fire from spreading and 2 additional lines were advance to combat the fire, tanker support was also requested from Station 12.
BC 1 arrived on scene 1849 hrs. and took command. Engine 12 and Tanker 12 (5,000 gallon) arrived on scene at 1850 hrs. Personnel from stations 1, 5, 8, 10, and 12 responded (total of 8 personnel).
After contacting the property owner (Mr. Barber) he advised the structure had been abandoned for several years and had no electrical power to it. He had been burning a brush pile across the road and it is speculated embers from that fire may have ignited the dry grass around the old structure.
Fire was brought under control and crews conducted an extensive overhaul operation. All fire crews cleared the scene at 2118 hrs. No injuries reported. EMS crews stood by as well as the sheriff's department for traffic control.”
Reported on the same day was at approximately 7:34 p.m. engines 10 and 801 were pulled from the scene of the fire in response to a single vehicle accident with possible entrapment.
Upon arrival at the vehicle accident, first arrival engine 801 advised “no one was trapped and patient was with EMS.” Both fire engines 10 and 801 returned to the fire on Johnson Short Road to continue combating that structure fire after EMS took the vehicle’s driver in the ambulance.
