Dixie, Georgia—The small, historical area known as Dixie, in Brooks County, is beginning to make a comeback with small businesses opening up gradually. One new business opening soon is Cotton & Camellia, Inc.

Cotton & Camellia, Inc. is a business owned by Danna “Dee” Simpson, a former principal out of Ashville, North Carolina. Simpson worked prior to that as an art teacher in Orlando, Florida and has a passion for the art world.

“Since I was a small child, I have always been in awe of the magic that transcends nature. Its beauty and presence have been a constant place to feel nurtured, find balance and strength,” says Simpson.

Simpson retired from public education and is married to Larry Simpson whose family has resided in Dixie since the 1850’s. Between them, they have six children. Simpson has lived in Dixie for five years. Simpson fell in love with the area, becoming a staunch citizen of Dixie and Brooks County.

Since their move here, Simpson has become a stellar part of the community, becoming a member of the Quitman Garden Club, a member of the Wiregrass Camellia Society, and a member of the Westbrook Dixie Community Center has the secretary.

Cotton & Camellia, Inc. is a dream for Simpson to help others see the beauty around us, to bring the community together enjoying each other’s company and enhancing the citizens artistic abilities. “As an artist, I want to share the beauty and magic of nature as it inspires me through my faith, love for life, and my journey to enhance the lives of others. I want to be a smidge of sparkle in each person’s day and leave each day better than I found it,” says Simpson.

Simpson hopes to eventually grow the business to include more art endeavors. She wants to help local upcoming artists find ways to grow their talent and further their passion for the arts. However, Cotton & Camellia, Inc. is beginning its journey by hosting four party classes for ages 5 years to adulthood.

COLQUITT CO – The GBI is investigating a use-of-force incident death involving a Trooper and a 44-year-old Pavo man. On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at about 2:30 p.m., a Georgia State Trooper was patrolling in Colquitt County, Georgia near State Road 33 and Lanier Road. While in the area, the trooper noticed Kennedy driving a blue 4-wheeler on SR33. The Trooper was aware of recent thefts and burglaries in the area involving a blue 4-wheeler. The Trooper followed Kennedy and attempted to pull him over using the emergency lights on his patrol car. Kennedy did not stop and drove away on the 4-wheeler. The Trooper chased him through several fields, a ditch, and back to the highway. While driving through another field during the chase, Kennedy turned the 4-wheeler into the Trooper’s patrol car, causing the 4-wheeler to overturn. Kennedy then ran away. The Trooper and a GSP K-9 chased Kennedy, and the K-9 caught up to and bit Kennedy to stop him. The Trooper handcuffed Kennedy and noticed that Kennedy had an injury from the bite. EMS and local deputies who responded to assist gave Kennedy medical treatment on the scene. Kennedy was taken to a hospital in Macon for treatment for his injuries. He later died at the hospital on Tuesday, August 27th in the early afternoon. Kennedy will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. The investigation is active and ongoing. Once complete, the case will be provided to Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brad Shealy for review
