On July 28th, District 1 Commissioner Lee Larko posted on his Facebook page the opening of the long-awaited Highway 122. Ealy in the afternoon signs signaling for detour routes, barricades and caution barriers were all removed or covered for the traffic to run this length of road once again.
Earlier, on July 13th, Georgia DOT-Southwest posted on their social media (Facebook) stating that, “We've gotten so many questions about construction on the new SR 122 bridge over Mule Creek in Brooks Co. that it's probably easiest just to put this in a post. The new scheduled completion date is mid-August. Originally there was a delay getting work authorization due to the required environmental protection review. The contractor requested & was granted those lost days, which extended the completion date. Though the bridge may appear "finished" to the average person, it is not finished by GDOT standards. Guardrail was recently installed, and the inspection process is underway to ensure installation meets the Department's specifications. Guardrail is an important safety component of bridges. So that's where the project is. When I am notified that the bridge is reopening, I will certainly let everyone know. Sorry I do not have updated photos.” However, the crews finished earlier than expected from the above post and opened it for the public traffic.
Many Northern Brooks commute on the road in order to get to their homes, jobs, and towns. Having to go on detour routes was beginning to take a rather hard toll on these people especially with rising prices at the pumps.
Comments on Commissioner Lee Larko’s page included thanks for the update, how awesome it is to drive the road once again without detours, several shares on social media too. The newly constructed Mule Creek Bridge is welcome site for many.
