On March’s last weekend, the Valdosta Boys and Girls Club held the Great American Cook-off. Eight first responder teams from Lowndes and Brooks battled it out for the title of 2024 Grillmaster. The event was sponsored by Miller Hardware and Traeger Grills.

Local leaders, volunteers, first responders and the local community came out to see who would win this grilling event. Plates of fresh grilled BBQ could be smelled throughout the entire area with many grabbing a plate from who they thought should win. Even pets were involved (on leashes) with a bit of tasting.

Outdoor fun and games were set up to enjoy the event as well. Corn hole contests were made by individuals, a bit of laying in the sun, and a lot of smiles and laughter.

A Facebook post was made to help spread the word about the event saying,

“And…that’s a wrap!!! These are some of our favorite moment’s from this year’s Great American Cook-Off: Battle of the First Responders. We are so thankful to everyone who was a part -our title sponsors: Miller Hardware Company Downtown and Traeger Grills, Marty and the team at Seasons Valdosta for partnering in planning and hosting, each of the competing teams and their sponsors, our incredible volunteers, all of you who came and bout a sausage dog plate (thanks to SL Sausage Company Valdosta and Great Valdosta United Way!!), and so many more. We could not have pulled off this event without you. We were so thankful to see all of your faces this past Saturday and can’t wait to see you again next year!!!”

COLQUITT CO – The GBI is investigating a use-of-force incident death involving a Trooper and a 44-year-old Pavo man. On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at about 2:30 p.m., a Georgia State Trooper was patrolling in Colquitt County, Georgia near State Road 33 and Lanier Road. While in the area, the trooper noticed Kennedy driving a blue 4-wheeler on SR33. The Trooper was aware of recent thefts and burglaries in the area involving a blue 4-wheeler. The Trooper followed Kennedy and attempted to pull him over using the emergency lights on his patrol car. Kennedy did not stop and drove away on the 4-wheeler. The Trooper chased him through several fields, a ditch, and back to the highway. While driving through another field during the chase, Kennedy turned the 4-wheeler into the Trooper’s patrol car, causing the 4-wheeler to overturn. Kennedy then ran away. The Trooper and a GSP K-9 chased Kennedy, and the K-9 caught up to and bit Kennedy to stop him. The Trooper handcuffed Kennedy and noticed that Kennedy had an injury from the bite. EMS and local deputies who responded to assist gave Kennedy medical treatment on the scene. Kennedy was taken to a hospital in Macon for treatment for his injuries. He later died at the hospital on Tuesday, August 27th in the early afternoon. Kennedy will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. The investigation is active and ongoing. Once complete, the case will be provided to Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brad Shealy for review
