Delta Innovative School principal Lamar Thomas recently announced that Earnest Lucas had been selected by his peers to represent Delta Innovative School as the 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year. A nine-year veteran teacher, Lucas has served the students in Brooks County for four years. He graduated with a B.S. in Middle Grades Education from Valdosta State University, a M. Ed in Science Education from Walden University and an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership from Liberty University. Lucas has been teaching math to Delta students in grades 9-12 but will serve as the Instructional Coach for the 23-24 school year.

Lucas strives to impact future generations through developing engaging lessons and activities and shared “My high school principal told me I would be a good candidate for the education program in college.” Principal Thomas said, “Mr. Lucas has been able to teach math in an innovative way that engages students. His students love him and look to him for guidance. He is a natural leader and doesn’t mind taking charge to be a leader.”

Lucas shared that a challenging aspect to be an educator is building relationships with all students. When asked about his favorite teaching memory, he said, “One of my student’s improved his reading level from a beginning reader to a 7th grade reading level in just two years.”

The son of Angelia Lucas, Mr. Lucas is married to Valious (Vo) Lucas. They are parents to daughter Mikaela Buckner – Lucas and son Kingston Buckner – Lucas. In his spare time, he enjoys mentoring youth and spending time with his family.

Lucas will represent Delta Innovative School for the 2023-2024 school year as Teacher of the Year and will compete at the district level for the title of Brooks County Schools Teacher of the Year. The BCS Teacher of the Year will compete at the state level for the title of Georgia Teacher of the Year. The BCS Teacher of the Year will be named at the Teacher of the Year banquet hosted in the fall.

COLQUITT CO – The GBI is investigating a use-of-force incident death involving a Trooper and a 44-year-old Pavo man. On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at about 2:30 p.m., a Georgia State Trooper was patrolling in Colquitt County, Georgia near State Road 33 and Lanier Road. While in the area, the trooper noticed Kennedy driving a blue 4-wheeler on SR33. The Trooper was aware of recent thefts and burglaries in the area involving a blue 4-wheeler. The Trooper followed Kennedy and attempted to pull him over using the emergency lights on his patrol car. Kennedy did not stop and drove away on the 4-wheeler. The Trooper chased him through several fields, a ditch, and back to the highway. While driving through another field during the chase, Kennedy turned the 4-wheeler into the Trooper’s patrol car, causing the 4-wheeler to overturn. Kennedy then ran away. The Trooper and a GSP K-9 chased Kennedy, and the K-9 caught up to and bit Kennedy to stop him. The Trooper handcuffed Kennedy and noticed that Kennedy had an injury from the bite. EMS and local deputies who responded to assist gave Kennedy medical treatment on the scene. Kennedy was taken to a hospital in Macon for treatment for his injuries. He later died at the hospital on Tuesday, August 27th in the early afternoon. Kennedy will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. The investigation is active and ongoing. Once complete, the case will be provided to Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brad Shealy for review
