Quitman, GA--On June 30th, the City of Quitman was alive with music, food, street vendors, small parade, and visitors. The reason behind all this fun was the annual Brooks County July 4th Celebration held the weekend before July 4th holiday. This year the event was held on a Friday night and local businesses all stayed open a bit later for those who came out to see the fireworks, parade and just enjoy the evening.
Many citizens enjoyed the events but several citizens and visitors commented on the intense heat, the overlapping of events at the same time, and the disappointment of the fireworks show this year.
Despite that disappointment and the heat, several visitors commented on the joy of being able to shop locally later than usual, enjoyed the food vendors, and the children enjoyed the parade and the games.
Local County Commissioner Patrick Folsom said, "This year's events fireworks had to be held at a different location from the previous years for two important reasons. The owner of the lot used in previous years could not be reached for permission to use that area once again. Another reason is do to the fire hazard of several older homes close to that area."
All is understandable on those reasons, however, lack of information to the public was not given and many feel they missed out on the fireworks this year.
Plans are being made to rectify those disappointments for the upcoming years celebrations and further information will be released once those plans are finalized.
Despite the grumbles the event held some very good vibes, showed the American spirit and brought together many citizens from all over the county.
Vendors, businesses, and parade volunteers were visited and seen by many who whooped, hollered, laughed, and enjoyed the event.
Thank you Quitman-Brooks County Chamber for the street vendors and late night businesses staying open. To the E911 department for gathering volunteers for the parade and to the Brooks County Commissioners for the fireworks and using the grounds of the courthouse.
To everyone Happy 4th of July.
