Visitors from everywhere enjoy Shopping after hours for Quitman's Open Market & street vendors night.

Yep! You read it right, Brooks County Christmas is here and oh wow what a start to the holiday season. Brooks County citizens and local county and city officials have banned together to make this year’s Christmas holiday one of wonder and joy, brining the spirit into the hearts of many.

On December 1st, Quitman-Brooks County Chamber of Commerce held their kick-off event in downtown Quitman calling it the Christmas Open House & Street Market. Local businesses and vendors came out from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to allow customers the advantage of finding gifts, eating later, and viewing wares.

Those who came by to were greeted with live Christmas music being played by a street musician on the saxophone, the local human society brought those cute little dogs and puppies for adoption, new decorative cups were in view to purchase, scented candles, soaps, and more could be found.

Pictures were also offered for those who wanted Christmas themes. Local photographers gathered to happily take pictures for the Christmas season with Christmas backgrounds, Santa and Mrs. Clause, as well as all the Christmas decorations.

Children enjoyed seeing Santa and found even more joy hearing Santa read a story to them. That wasn’t all though for the little ones, local businesses decorated stations for those who wanted to get their face painted, those who wanted to create an ornament of their own, and for those who wanted to write their letter to Santa.

Quitman-Brooks County Chamber posted on their Facebook page, “Downtown Quitman was full of Christmas Cheer and festivity this evening for our Christmas Open House and streets with carols…It was a perfect evening to kick off the holiday season!”

Pictures are also posted for those who wish to view the scene, find their phot with Santa or simply enjoy viewing those who attended.

Further joy was spread on December 2nd with a group of sponsors to bring Movie Night! Locals and visitors could gather on the courthouse lawn to view the outdoor movie “A Boy called Christmas”. The movie began at 6 p.m. with folks gathered on blankets, in chairs, and with families. Popcorn and drink were offered as well as the ability to bring your own.

The event was sponsored by the Quitman-Brooks County Chamber of Commerce, the Brooks County Commissioners, Brooks County Citizens, Brooks County Fire Department, Tastee Treats and Lisa Folsom. Quitman-Brooks County Chamber posted, “Thank you to all of those who attended the Christmas movie on the square tonight. Attendance was small, but memories made were huge! Thanks to all those involved with the making of this event…” Photos are also uploaded, and videos are uploaded as well.

Continuing the holiday spirit, Brooks County Commissioners and the Chamber are gathering once again December 3rd for the Lighting of the Christmas tree, Storytime, and a parade! This event will begin on the courthouse grounds at 4 p.m. with the lighting of the tree at 6 p.m. and the parade at 6:15 p.m.

Further events are scheduled as well throughout Brooks County including Blue Christmas in Pavo, Georgia beginning December 4th at 2 p.m. and a live band as well as a visit from Santa.

Barwick, Georgia is also getting a visit from Santa in their city park on December 10th, so be sure to come see him.

Don’t forget local events can also be found throughout Brooks County with the decorations of lights to view, local small businesses to buy from, and local farms to gather that wonderful food to cook on Christmas.

COLQUITT CO – The GBI is investigating a use-of-force incident death involving a Trooper and a 44-year-old Pavo man. On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at about 2:30 p.m., a Georgia State Trooper was patrolling in Colquitt County, Georgia near State Road 33 and Lanier Road. While in the area, the trooper noticed Kennedy driving a blue 4-wheeler on SR33. The Trooper was aware of recent thefts and burglaries in the area involving a blue 4-wheeler. The Trooper followed Kennedy and attempted to pull him over using the emergency lights on his patrol car. Kennedy did not stop and drove away on the 4-wheeler. The Trooper chased him through several fields, a ditch, and back to the highway. While driving through another field during the chase, Kennedy turned the 4-wheeler into the Trooper’s patrol car, causing the 4-wheeler to overturn. Kennedy then ran away. The Trooper and a GSP K-9 chased Kennedy, and the K-9 caught up to and bit Kennedy to stop him. The Trooper handcuffed Kennedy and noticed that Kennedy had an injury from the bite. EMS and local deputies who responded to assist gave Kennedy medical treatment on the scene. Kennedy was taken to a hospital in Macon for treatment for his injuries. He later died at the hospital on Tuesday, August 27th in the early afternoon. Kennedy will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. The investigation is active and ongoing. Once complete, the case will be provided to Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brad Shealy for review
