The 2022 Brooks County Skillet Festival was held on the Brooks County Courthouse grounds on October 15, 2022. It began at 9 a.m. and ended around 4 p.m.

Local vendors, traveling vendors, and several local businesses were selling their wares and crafts. Local politicians and parties were also in attendance hoping to help answer questions and get voters on their side.

Food vendors were serving both hot and cold treats, meals, and beverages. Several visitors were enjoying those wonderful funnel cakes, and hot wings while others were enjoying their cool bowl of ice cream with all the toppings.

Games were also being played from golf to corn hole and competitions were favored from frog jumping contest to the skillet throwing contest.

Bands, including the Trojans marching band, shared wonderful sounds that was sure to have visitors sitting in the shade tapping their foot or on the grounds dancing along with the music.

Children squealed with delight at being able to view the inside of the Brooks County Fire Departments’ trucks. Delighted to be able to pet animals like a baby calf, turtle, pig, rabbit, goat and more. Train whistle and laughter could also be heard at the back of the Courthouse while the little train took kids riding.

Visitors were also able to take their own pictures with the backdrop of an old John Deere tractor, haybales, and pumpkins.

The Quitman-Brooks County Chamber of Commerce stated on their Facebook Media Site, “It was a perfect day in Brooks County for the Skillet Festival. There were frog hop, skillet cooking and skillet throwing competitions, We had so many unique vendors selling everything from local honey, pecans and pepper jellies to all of the handmade crafts that make up a true southern festival. Live music from The Patrick Road Band and our very own Trojans Band created the perfect atmosphere. There was no shortage of wonderful food and drinks for everyone to enjoy throughout the day. Thank you to all of our sponsors, vendors, and community who made The Brooks County 11th Annual Skillet Festival a success.”

COLQUITT CO – The GBI is investigating a use-of-force incident death involving a Trooper and a 44-year-old Pavo man. On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at about 2:30 p.m., a Georgia State Trooper was patrolling in Colquitt County, Georgia near State Road 33 and Lanier Road. While in the area, the trooper noticed Kennedy driving a blue 4-wheeler on SR33. The Trooper was aware of recent thefts and burglaries in the area involving a blue 4-wheeler. The Trooper followed Kennedy and attempted to pull him over using the emergency lights on his patrol car. Kennedy did not stop and drove away on the 4-wheeler. The Trooper chased him through several fields, a ditch, and back to the highway. While driving through another field during the chase, Kennedy turned the 4-wheeler into the Trooper’s patrol car, causing the 4-wheeler to overturn. Kennedy then ran away. The Trooper and a GSP K-9 chased Kennedy, and the K-9 caught up to and bit Kennedy to stop him. The Trooper handcuffed Kennedy and noticed that Kennedy had an injury from the bite. EMS and local deputies who responded to assist gave Kennedy medical treatment on the scene. Kennedy was taken to a hospital in Macon for treatment for his injuries. He later died at the hospital on Tuesday, August 27th in the early afternoon. Kennedy will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. The investigation is active and ongoing. Once complete, the case will be provided to Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brad Shealy for review
